Reflections

February 29, 2008

I’ve written few reflections on this date. But leap years are not primarily on my mind.

Today is for me. I choose so. This is what my choice looks like. In a few minutes I will leave for Oregon to say ‘good-by’ to my grandmother. From what I understand, she won’t respond to my presence. Like I said, this is for me – for today.

I could be many places over the weekend. My wife would love my presence. My daughter came home to do a project with me. I’m scheduled to preach two services, teach one Bible lesson, most likely be expected to play piano and introduce guest presenters.

All of these relationships take second place – for today. I know the Bible says to let the dead bury the dead. But this decision doesn’t feel like it’s about the dead.

I pray that what I do for me can also be for someone else too. I don’t hear voices telling me, but I am convinced this is my destiny – for today.

So with all the demands on my life, I give myself to my grandmother – for today.

“Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.
You must warn each other every day, as long as it is called “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.” Hebrews 3:12-13
