Reflections

January 11, 2008

There’s an unfinished job that I dressed for this morning. And in the dressing I’m reminded of another unfinished task. The job is removing a tree at the church. The task is removing the part of me that made it difficult to button my work shirt. I think the former is the easiest.

What’s most important? to finish or to start? Journeys are never taken without the first step. Yet summits are never mounted without the last.

Successful living requires both initiative and perseverance. There are times in our lives when we look forward. There’s something to do. There are other times when we look back. There’s something done. Then there are times when we just do.

So I’ll quit reflecting and planning and get out the door.

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it-- lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, ‘saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’” Luke 14:28-30
