Reflections

Mark 4 records a fascinating story from Jesus. In it He illustrates principles of His Father’s kingdom. Jesus talks about a man who plants a field, goes to sleep and allows the earth to produce a crop all by itself.

Now I understand the work that goes into growing healthy plants. The orchids that are getting ready to bloom at my house keep me constantly reminded of the importance of conscientious care. However I have no power to produce a bloom. I have cared for one plant for 3 years without a bloom. I believe that with patience, I will have a flower one day. But I cannot produce that blossom.

In a similar way, I cannot make spiritual life happen. I can protect an environment where it can more easily take place. I can jeopardize my spiritual growth. But God works the miracle of spiritual transformation and fruitfulness. I go to sleep just like the man in Jesus’ story and amazing things take place.

Four plants in my front room have new flower spikes. I anticipate the variety of color they will bring to my home. Yet the power and life causing that growth is not in me. I will wait and be blessed and amazed. God still works in marvelous ways.

“Jesus also said, ‘Here is another illustration of what the Kingdom of God is like: A farmer planted seeds in a field, and then he went on with his other activities. As the days went by, the seeds sprouted and grew without the farmer’s help, because the earth produces crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens. And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle.’” Mark 4:26-29

Be at peace,
