Who among us is qualified to be God’s spokesperson?
I look at H.M.S. Richards or Billy Graham and see effective mouthpieces.
I consider Mark Finley or Hyveth Williams gifted communicators. But
when it comes to us ordinary, every-day people, who does God tap to
be part of His plan?
I guess I proclaim God’s ability to trust His word to broken vessels.
My health over the past month made me feel fairly shattered. But other
issues I face keep me humble as well.
Take for instance a pastor friend of mine who faced significant challenges
in a new church setting. This pastor is regularly asked by the congregation
if Old Testament readings are really necessary. The pastor believes
yes. This pastor has been approached by local church leadership requesting
that Hindu, Muslim, Native American and Buddhist perspectives be shared
more from the pulpit. The pastor believes no.
When I pray for the clarity of this pastor’s Biblical voice I
am particularly challenged because I do not agree with expression of
her sexual orientation. I do recognize that she has credibility that
I could never have with a congregation that has been deeply hurt by
rabid Christianity.
Such are those little ironies of life. I have my own list of failings.
Why should God choose me? Why should He choose you? I don’t know
sometimes. I just know that we are His choice and through His grace
we have the opportunity to share the influence of His love. Amazing!
“And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy
upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them that were
not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.”
Hosea 2:23
Be at peace,
Pastor Steve
