Reflections

Welcome,

Have you ever wished for a still, small voice to guide your life? Have you ever wished that, once you heard the voice, you’d pay attention? I’ve had reason to answer ‘yes’ to each of these questions. For instance. . .

For several weeks, at intermittent times, I’ve heard water running in the pipes at home. The sound always came from the wall adjacent the toilet. Each time I was sure my wife hadn’t turned off the shower. Each time I was wrong.

I put dye in the toilet reservoir. Nothing. I imagined old, decayed pipes in the wall. I quickly extinguished those thoughts since I didn’t want to try to wiggle under my house. The sound kept coming and going. I knew there was running water somewhere, but since the visual data didn’t match my auditory data, I blamed it on a vivid imagination.

Early this week I was in my front yard, taking advantage of the sunny weather. Guess what I heard? Running water, of course. Since my knee injury, I hadn’t toured the yard much. (The surgery was last week and the doctor says my prognosis looks great) I discovered that I hadn’t turned the faucets off that connect to the automatic sprinkler system. So even though I had turned the system off in the garage, I was getting a little leak through one of the valves.

The wall in the bathroom is silent now. But I wish I had been willing to acknowledge the clear prompting that said, “Water is running somewhere in this house.”

One of God’s promises for guidance is recorded in Isaiah 30:21. “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’ Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” It just isn’t enough to hear. We have to respond.
I need that voice. I want His voice. May we not only tune into His voice, but may we also act on what we hear.

Under His Wings,
Pastor Steve
